The Cranleighan, November 1959
The prospects of the coming season are complicated by several senior players retiring and the difficulties of rebuilding the teams pose an interesting problem for the selection committee. There are many promising players in the Club and with the rather static position of the Ist XI last season few of these were tried out in this team. This season, then, presents a grand opportunity for those players who aspire to greater heights and they will be welcomed to a higher team in which, if they are ready to learn, they should go a long way toward improving their play.

The Club is seeking the advice of professional turf experts with a view to improving the playing surface at Thames Ditton. The ground undergoes severe treatment throughout the season and has suffered accordingly and it is felt that the time has come to rejuvenate. A ground spiker has been purchased and it is hoped to put this to good use. The groundsman has spent the summer months repainting and generally renovating the pavilion and the Hockey Club is indebted to him for his efforts.

The Cranleighan, March 1960
It was with regret that we learnt of the death of the Reverend C. S. W. Marcon, M.A., R.D., who was Master and Hockey Coach at Cranleigh from 1921-1936, and a Vice-President of the Club since 1929. He gained twenty-one caps for England, playing at inside-left. With S. H. Shoveller and S. H. Saville he made up the finest trio of inside forwards England has ever had. He played a big part in developing hockey at Cranleigh.

As foreseen in the last issue of The Cranleighan, difficulties have arisen in the selection of teams through the lack of members. It is most unfortunate that at one fell swoop we have lost no fewer than twenty members-twelve have retired, four have gone into the Forces, and four are studying either at University or for their final examinations. On the other hand, only three new members have joined the Club. As a result of this our regular playing strength is down to about thirty.

It has not, therefore, been possible to field a 3rd XI; and, of course, the 1st and 2nd XIs have been adversely affected, the results so far being : -

Once again a party will be going to the Easter Festival at Worthing. This is being organised by Cecil Benzecry, and a most enjoyable week-end, with hockey in the friendliest of atmospheres, is forecast.

The Cranleighan, July 1960
Owing to the lack of numbers in the Club the past season has not been as successful as was hoped; however, it did not fall far short of the previous season when the membership was somewhat greater. Towards the end of the season several schoolboys were included in the teams at Thames Ditton, and it is hoped that they will join the Club on leaving School.

Once again an enjoyable Easter Tour was arranged by Cecil Benzecry, and in spite of the fact that only seven members of the Club stayed at the hotel, the results were very satisfactory, two games being won, two lost and one drawn.

The prospects seem to be good as none of the present members are leaving the Club, and we should once again be able to field three teams each week. New members are always welcome, and if any O.C. not yet playing for the Club, or any schoolboy, would like to play, he should contact the Honorary General Secretary, or anv member of the Club.

Training sessions and practice games will be held at Thames Ditton on the two Saturdays prior to the beginning of the season, and it is hoped that as many members as possible will attend these as early season fitness is essential.
