Dull, dull, dull

Old Cranleighans (109 for 8) drew with Wanderers (259 for 8 dec)

You would be hard pressed to find a duller game than this. Twenty-odd people took a day off work to play in this game, and it is unlikely that many of them will do the same next year. Yes, the Wanderers had a good batting side with one Test player - Zimbabwe's Trevor Gripper who scored a hundred and took four wickets - and one other first-class batsman in James Redmayne (who scored a century for MCC against the school in May). There was not too much wrong with the declaration, although it didn't come until 3.50pm. The sun even shone throughout. But, God, what tedium.

Wanderers batted first and got off to a brisk start with Gripper and Redmayne running well between the wickets. Redmayne was bowled by Dom Lewis - whose marathan stint in the heat was an outstanding effort and he desrrved more luck - and that caused Gripper to open up. At lunch, Wanderers had reached 142 for 3 with Gripper - dropped by Graeme Brown early on - on 80. Gripper should have gone shortly after the break but Henry Watkinson spilt a simple chance at midwicket, and he went on to his hundred before the persevering Brown finally had him caught. The innings went on, with less momentum, until the declaration came.

Simon Copleston and Skank Finnegan opened up and withstood a strong opening barrage in the 50 minutes until tea which was reached with the score on 34 for 0. By then the asking rate was seven an over, and yet there was no sign of the game being opened up when play resumed. Eventually a spinner was brought on, but it was Gripper, who extracted more turn and bounce than anyone had done all week. At the start of the last 20 the run-rate was 10 an over and the game over, bar some reckless batting by us. And that's just what happened. Peter Hobbs aimed an airy swipe and was bowled - returning to the pavilion to be greeted by a tunnel of shame formed by his team-mates - Richard Seeckts did likewise, and then Brown charged down the wicket and attempted to smack Gripper onto the astroturf ... he missed and was stumped by yards. "He bloody hit me so it's only fair I have a go back," explained Brown. Fortunately, Lewis kept the other end up with excellent judgment of what to leave and what to play, and with Watkinson ensured that Wanderers didn't secure a thoroughly undeserved victory.

As we dashed off to Nick Read's birthday party we were left wondering what the hell the point of the day had been.
