OCs draw despite Watkinson's salvo
Old Cranleighans (185 for 8) drew with Sam Watkinson's XI (229 for 6 dec)
The OC week started in brilliant sunshine and against the backdrop of another sumptuous Rick Johnson BBQ - Johnson's week got off to a less impressive beginning as he was bowled for 0 by the second ball of the match. Macleay provided the cornerstone of the visitors' innings with a patient 81, Billy Smart gave the occasion a sense of the fairground by batting in shorts (having split his whites) in making a idiosyncratic 67 before falling to a Steve Bailey double-bouncer.
Damien Hill and Gareth Starling set up our reply and took us into a strong position before Sam Watkinson, steaming in from the top end, struck to rip the heart out of our innings. He removed Hill in his seventh over, and then turned the match on its head with a hat-trick spread over two overs. He dismissed Starling to a dubious leg-before decision, and Will Bond to a less dubious one, with the fifth and sixth balls of his ninth over, and had Bailey excellently caught low down at first slip by Sean Morris with the first ball of his tenth. Thereafter it was survival, although Will Stephens showed some glimpses of old in his first match since Kenya in 2001. On a docile pitch against the old ball Ed Henderson and Martin Williamson played out the final ten overs with relative ease.
