Old Cranleighans lost to Sam Watkinson's XI by 111 runs

(July 13 2002) A glorious day on which the sun shone throughout, plenty of spectators to watch and a superb barbeque courtesy of Rick Johnson in the evening. Unfortunately, we were unable to make much of a contest for a strong opposition and slumped to a convincing defeat shortly after the start of the last 20 overs. The outcome was not too surprising given the absence of many of our league-committed players, and the loss of our young gun Craig Proctor at lunch after a family illness. Sean Morris, formerly of Hampshire, and Key plundered a very mediocre bowling attack for 187 for the first wicket, both scoring 107 in the process, and the declaration when it came was a merciful release. All four wickets to fall owed more to the batsmen looking for big hits rather than any guile on the part of the bowlers. Tony Maskell, returning after an absence of 38 years, took two wickets, his first for the club since 1962. Our reply started promisingly, even after Simon Copleston had been removed by a brilliant diving catch at cover from Mark Durden Smith, but from 81 for 2 we slipped to 89 for 5 and the game was up. A brief onslaught from Michael Chetwode at the end guided us towards respectability but the day was more memorable for the catering and the weather rather than OC cricket.
