Hook, line and sinker
Old Cranleighans (200 for 4 dec) lost to Surrey Cryptics (201 for 4) by six wickets
The Surrey Cryptics recorded their first win against us in five meetings thanks to some tight bowling, a classic anchor innings from Phillip Wright, and inspired poker-like chat from Richard Seeckts, their captain and mentor. Professing a weak batting side, Seeckts persuaded the gullible OC captain that the best way to make a game of this would be for us to set a target and then manage the chase accordingly. Part One of the plan went to order, but Part Two didn't and the Cryptics deservedly won the match.
Opting for a batting order based on the players' surnames beginning with W, John Wells and Iain Wilkie opened the innings and struggled against naggingly accurate bowling from Paul Goss (an OC) and Kowalski. Wells was bowled off his pads by Goss for 8, and then Wilkie missed straight one from Polish Kowalski (the Cryptics side might consider trying to get sponsorship from the UN). It should have been worse but David Westcott was dropped by Kowalski at square leg and then Seeckts at slip on his way to his second fifty of the season. Sam Watkinson quickly found his touch, and once the opening bowlers were withdrawn, runs came with ease. The seemingly tame Jimmy Greenhough removed both Watkinson and Westcott, but Henry Watkinson and Sam Langmead then took up the challenge. Henry's high (or low) point came three overs from the end when he was dropped four times in five balls off Grindrod - a sitter at mid-off, a sitter at square leg, but most impressively twice he skyed the ball to Goss at long-on where the fielder ran in and watched the ball lob over his head for four. Seeckts's apoplexy was worth the admission fee.
Peter Rollings turned back the clock and removed Hope Dunbar with his worst ball of the day, a leg-side full toss, and then produced a peach to knock back Cupit's off stump. But thereafter little went right. Wright dug in for the duration, playing a perfect anchor role and although he occasionally became too becalmed, it was a match-winning innings. He should have been dismissed when on 33 but a simple caught-and-bowled chance to Michael Chetwode was spilt as a diving Wells, positioned at silly mid-off the ball before, collided with him and the catch went begging. Westcott pulled a hamstring attempting an age-defying run out and thereafter cut a forlorn figure at first slip, spilling three extremely hard chances that came his way. Richard Pollitt bowled well at first but suffered as David Leng cut loose. Leng fell to a sucker ball from Martin Williamson (who taunted him to try and hit a fourth straight boundary), but Grindrod and Wright enjoyed some deserved luck as the Cryptics eased home in the gloom.
