Old Cranleighans v School, Jubilee, July 3, 2005

Crump leads School to crushing win

Cranleigh School 177 for 1 (Mark Crump 96*) beat Old Cranleighans 174 (54.2 overs, Mike Chase 48, Bob Hume 22, Meakker 3-26, Crump T 2-26, Crump M 2-31, Pritchard N 2-38) by nine wickets

OC Day was a low key affair but anyone who wandered down to Jubilee would have seen the School steamroller an OC side with an impressive display of clinical, classy cricket. Tradition dictates that the OC's bat first in this fixture and it was clear that even the youngest members of the side realised this as they rapidly deserted the pavilion area hoping they wouldn't be asked to open the innings. Minutes before the start captain Chetwode cornered the diminutive Tom Merry and the boisterous Tim Payne and suggested that they were the first to don their helmets. Their role against the school's quick opening bowler Stuart Meaker was more about seeing the new ball than seeing it off.

After some hostile and accurate bowling both openers and Janmohammed were dismissed before the score had reached 30. However, Chase and Bob Hume, who had both arrived late as usual, undertook valuable repair work to place the OC's in a respectable position at lunch. Hume's decision not to wear a helmet and not to try to avoid the short ball suggested a slight lack of common sense. This was confirmed by his explanation of his late arrival - he had run out of petrol despite knowing his petrol gauge didn't work!

The one wicket the OCs did take was a run out - Serin Waters beaten by Andy Houston's direct hit
Too many glasses of wine for the senior partner and too many plates of food for the junior ensured that the partnership was short lived after the break. Chase flailed at Meaker from square leg whilst Hume received some blows to the body before both were removed. The rest of the batting offered little and we ended up with an inadequate 150?

Worse was to follow. The School openers Crump and Waters looked technically and temperamentally excellent. Howard Hardy-King and Alex Craven discovered that both batsmen could punish the short ball. It took the introduction of Chetwode to halt the scoring and create enough pressure that Rob Merry was able to affect a run out with a direct hit from mid on. However, that was the only wicket to fall. Crump (98*) lead the School to victory with an innings that deserved a century.
