Old Cranleighans

Old Cranleighans beat Old Leightonians by 176 runs (July 21 2002) An excellent allround batting performance guided us through to the Brewers Cup semi-finals, the margin of victory being our best in a club match (only exceeded by the 282-run defeat of the School in 1880). Old Leightonians won the toss and started well, Simon Copleston being trapped leg-before in the second over; that was as good as it got for them. Although Will Howard fell for 25, Eds Copleston and Mike Chase added 101 at a run a ball for the third wicket. Copleston was caught behind just before lunch and Chase followed in an identical fashion immediately after the break, but that brought together Abeed Janmohamed and Graeme Brown who smashed 94 from 11 overs. Brown eventually went for 58 when he chipped a simple return catch to Paul Newell Price, but Janmohamed then struck the shot of the day - an astonishing reverse sweep for six off Jon Shingles - to bring up our 300. We lost two more wickets – those of Michael Chetwode and Nick Read – in the final over. Needing a challenging 5.58 runs per over, the OLs were as good as buried within six overs as they slumped to 15 for 4. Their captain, Paul Newell Price, was unfortunate when a defensive shot off Read spun back onto his stumps. The next ball Shingles gloved an excellent Read bouncer and was caught behind. Proving the lightning does strike twice, Read then dismissed Gillmor when again a defensive shot spun back into the batsman’s wicket. Tim Evans then got into the act, trapping Allan leg-before. Thomas briefly led a spirited counterattack with 45 off 37 balls but at tea the OLs needed 223 off 30 overs with five wickets in hand. The end came relatively quickly, although Mike Thomas dispatched his first four balls – from Brown – for 4,4,6,4 before being stumped off the fifth to enliven the final overs. Although it was the batsmen who stole the headlines, Chetwode’s figures – 11-7-8-3 – were quite remarkable.
