Old Cranleighans

Old Cranleighans lost to Old Georgians by two wickets
(July 16 2002) Close games against Georgians are almost guaranteed, and this one, played at Cranleigh for the first time in a decade, was no exception, going down to the last over. But for some truly awful catching in the last half-hour we probably would have won. The OC innings was dominated by a typically bombastic century from Rick Johnson who, after a nervous and slow start, laid into an opposition against whom he had scored his maiden hundred 12 months earlier. In all he hit four sixes and 19 fours, reaching three-figures in 135 minutes. It was the fourth-highest score for the club and the third-highest on Jubilee. On a hard and true wicket and helped by a fast outfield we scored quickly. Perhaps the most remarkable innings came from Simon Copleston who, stung by comments from fielders, let loose his anger with a series of cracking straight drives before being run out. We took the field with nine – Johnson and Pete Hobbs were off shopping - a situation which was only remedied with their return after an hour, by which time the Georgians had got off to a flier. A sharp legside stumping by Abeed Janmohamed off Martin Williamson removed the dangerous Hoyle and the innings lost it’s way for a while. Janmohamed passed the gloves to Steve Bailey and then, with Henry Watkinson, exploited the crumbling wicket to reduce Georgians to 231 for 8 with 10 of the last 20 overs remaining. But then our fielding became ragged – Chetwode spilt a straightforward chance at long-off and then with the first ball of the penultimate over Eds Copleston dropped Jansen at short midwicket and with it went our last chance of victory in a match we should have wrapped up long before. As it was, 278 was the highest score any side batting second had posted to beat us.
