Watkinson takes us close

Old Cranleighans (250 for 9) drew with Grasshoppers (261 for 7 dec)

As the heatwave continued, Henry Watkinson lost his third straight toss (we lost every toss during the week) and were subjected to a lengthy time in the field while Richard Thomas and his Grasshoppers frolicked in the swimming pool. Peter Hobbs bowled hos only genuinely fast spell of the week, but the bulk of the bowling was done by Graeme Brown and Watkinson (bowling his slow pies). The arrival of New Zealand Test batsman Hamish Marshall resulted in the run-rate incraesing, although he was deprived of a deserved century by the tireless Brown.

Our reply started hesitantly, losing Simon Copleston and Graeme Brown early on, but Rick Johnson found his touch and was at his entertaining best. Keeping more balls than normal on the ground, Johnson had the Grasshoppers on the back foot and he was on for a hundred when he fell to an excvellent catch in the deep. We were up with the asking rate, and Clem Williams, in possibly his final innings on Jubilee, batted well for 40 before running out of puff (and running out Hobbs which is forgivable). A clatter of wickets looked to have brought down the curtain on our chase, but Watkinson cut loose and 30 from three overs became 14 from the last one. Crucially, Watkinson was bowled and Seeckts played out the remaining four balls.

The evening was spent in The Drink nightclub where various OCs behaved fairly badly. The highlight was when the captain crashed and burned. Henry's chat-up line of "Has anyone ever told you that you look like Barbara Streisand?" was so badly received that the girl hit him several times, cutting his lip in the process. "She had a big nose," explained Watkinson.
