Old Cranleighans beat Grasshoppers by 83 runs (July 15 2002) For much of the last session it seemed that the Grasshoppers would escape the defeat that their negative batting deserved before Mike Chetwode polished off the tail to ensure that justice was done. Batting first after winning the toss, Nathan Ross and Simon Copleston put on an untroubled 117 for the first wicket, and then Mike Chase took up with a quickfire 61. The tiring Ross fell ten short of a maiden hundred and we lost cheap wickets pushing for the declaration which, when it came, was generous – we faced 52 overs and would have bowled 54 back had the Grasshoppers batted through. They started well, but after losing two quick wickets before tea (53 for 3) they amazingly shut up shop, Bobby Lowe in particular seeming prepared to bat out the last two hours with barely an attacking stroke. The unlikely breakthrough came from the slow left-arm filth of Chase, and from 127 for 5 Grasshoppers lost four wickets in as many overs. The last pair – which included the limpet-like Lowe – he on until Fisher was trapped leg-before by Michael Chetwode with 19 balls remaining.
