Holding on in the heat

Old Georgians (293 for 5 dec) drew with Old Cranleighans (219 for 9)

Of the four sweltering days which began the week, this was the hottest, and the hottest of the summer with nearby Wisley setting the record for the warmest place in the UK at 93ºF. After travelling in the belief that we had 11 men (with one of them, Rick Johnson, not available until lunchtime) we arrived to find that we had 14, including a quorum of young guns. Henry Watkinson solved the problem in his own style, and it was only when the scorebook was examined at the end of the day that he realised that eleven men had batted and a 12th, Pete Hobbs, had bowled and then departed to the shade of the pavilion.

The match started badly with Hoyle dropped off a straightfoward chance by a newcomer (anonymity preserved) off the first ball - Hoyle went on to score a hundred. On a track every bit as flat as the Jubilee wicket chances had to be taken - Watkinson's call after an hour of "come on guys, we must hold on to catches" was, inevitably, followed the very next ball by another spill off Hoyle ... by Watkinson himself. Matt Church, formerly of several first-class counties, gradually found his touch, although he should have fallen to a catch at backward square-leg by Richard Seeckts but Watkinson had been called for a no-ball. Church took on Brown, lofting him straight back into the astrotuf for a massive six, but the next ball Brown's wide dart left him stranded and Skank Finnegan completed the stumping. Hoyle completed his hundred before falling to the persevering Campbell, but still the declaration didn't come. Eventually the Georgians were called in, but their captain recieved a less than cordial welcome when he popped his head round the dressing-room door to explain that the late declaration was because his players "hadn't been ready".

Seeckts's attempts to repeat his 1990 heroics were soon snuffed out but Gareth Starling and Will Howard set about anything short with vigour. Starling fell to the first of four superb catches, but Graeme Brown took up where he had left off, sweeping with particular efficiency. Howard reached his fifty with a cracking cut through the covers, but looking to repeat the shot later in the over he was well held low down at cover by Notton. The Browns then added 54 (Pete's share was 3) before Graeme was dismissed by a stunning catch at short long-leg for 59, and thereafter the innings slowly subsided. Merry and Finnegan batted with impressive determination, but it was left to Clarke to play out the final over to earn a draw. If the Georgians had declared earlier they probably would have won.
