Old Cranleighans beat Ewhurst by an innings and 16 runs
(September 22 2002) What started the day as a fixture between Jack Frost and Ewhurst became, after a hasty committee meeting, an Old Cranleighan match when only four of the side could claim to be Jack Frost players while all 11 were OCs. The result was our first innings win since before the war in what was the latest game played by the club.

Ewhurst surprisingly batted after winning the toss and were soon all at sea against Richard Hume (who admitted after taking his career-best figures that he'd love to bat against his own bowling). Mike Chase weighed in with three wickets, but the highlight of the afternoon was Steve Bailey's spell, which included several wides, two of which cleared the batsman by a fair way, and the unveilling of his new 'mystery ball' - the only mystery was how he avoided being no-balled for blatant chucking.

The Watkinson brothers laid into the Ewhurst bowling - spurred on by dark clouds which passed without incident - and we overtook Ewhurst's score after 11 overs. Will Bond's cameo was entertaining, playing and missing more than the rest of the club had managed all season in between cracking cover drives. Chase and Simon Copleston made hay at the end of the innings, even surviving some appalling calling which should have seen Chase run out by the length of the pitch.

Batting again, Ewhurst started confidently but Tom Hufton found his length to blow away the top order, Payne recording a pair inside four hours. Hume and Sam Watkinson returned at the end to scuttle the tail, the victory being completed with two balls remaining.
