Abeed Janmohamed and Andy Houston collide - Houston held the catch

The quarter-final of the Brewers Cup was a disappointingly one-sided affair which was over shortly after 3pm. So uneven was the contest that the usually ruthless Eds Copleston even agreed an early lunch to allow two of the opposition, who were seemingly on a sightseeing tour of Surrey, time to arrive. It made little difference to the outcome, as did the decision by the school coach to ban Stuart Meaker from playing.
On another blistering day we won the toss and, given that only two Edmundians were on the ground, fielded. Onlookers praised Copleston for his charity; those in know realised he wanted the quick wicket which would have meant the visitors had to declare their innings closed! Despite some good bowling from Ed Henderson and the creakingly-stiff Henry Watkinson, the breakthrough didn't come until more visitors had arrived. Graeme Brown had time to spill a routine slip catch, and the first wicket almost produced a spectacular collision as Abeed Janmohamed and Andy Houston converged on a skyer, Houston holding on despite Janmohamed's best efforts to flatten him. The introduction of Alex Craven, who took 4 for 12, turned an uneven game into a rout, and good bowling by the Houston brothers helped to turn the screw.

Andy Houston scores a direct hot to complete a run out

Set only 80 to win, Ed MacGregor and Johnny Gates set off at a brisk pace, and although Gates holed out to mid-on, the result was by then academic, and MacGregor had time to complete a pugnacious fifty before the end.
