Copleston joins the hundred club

Old Cranleighans (197 for 3) beat Celeriacs (196 for 7) by seven wickets

The Celeriacs, a team run by a couple of editors at Wisden CricInfo, kindly stepped into the void left by the Old Etonians' late cry-off (they were involved in the Cricketer Cup semi-final) and provided a good game on one of the hottest days of the year. The loss of the toss by Simon Copleston, captain on his 100th appearance for the club, meant we had to bowl first in the heat and on a wicket which offered the bowlers almost no help we suffered for a while. Martin Williamson made the breakthrough, courtesy of a stunning catch by Copleston, and once he had dismissed both openers the innings never regained the early momentum. Williamson's innocuous bowling proved hard to get away, and with Graeme Brown plugging away from the bottom end the Celeriacs struggled. On finding out that Rick Wells kept for the school, Rick Johnson surrendered the pads and took two wickets courtesy of stumpings from his more stylish replacement.

Henry Watkinson and Wells got our reply off to a flying start putting on 80 in 12 overs - Watkinson hitting high and hard with the classy Wells relying on touch and class, although he did loft one sweetly-timed clip off his legs into the oak. Watkinson holed out within sight of his fifty, Wells after he had reached his, and after a brief cameo from Sam Langmead, Copleston and Brown saw us home with nine balls to spare.
