Old Cranleighans lost to Buccaneers by 6 runs
(July 28 2002) On the hottest day of the summer we contrived to lose the toss and field and lose our captain, Steve Bailey, until almost lunchtime (he got lost!). Our makeshift attack, supplemented by the last-minute recruitement of former Northamptonshire player James Oram, laboured long and hard against a Buccaneers side which seemed unable to up the pace. Six of their batsmen played themselves in but none was able to go on and make the most of some indifferent bowling - they batted almost 60 overs before declaring. Our reply started well, with Simon Copleston and Richard Hume posting 123 for the first wicket - Hume hitting a career-best 85 - before the inevitible mini-collapse. Oram's seemed to have won the match with some massive hitting - striking Wolfries for three sixes in one over, all of which cleared the trees at the far end of Jubilee - but his unnecessary dismissal triggered another collapse. To the credit of captain Abeed Janmohamed we kept going for the runs, losing our final wicket to a run out with three balls remaining.
