 Profile

Richard Seeckts made one of the more dramatic OC debuts. In the second match of the 1984 cricket week, fresh from two years in the school 1st XI, the pencil-thin Seeckts bowled a remarkable ten-over spell against the Old Walcountians in which he took four wicket for five runs. That, however, remains his best bowling for the club. He bowled gentle medium-pacers which swung considerably, but shortly after leaving school he lost his control suffering a medium-pacer's 'yipps'from which he never really recovered, although occasionally he shows glimpses of what he was once capable of. As a batsmen he should have scored far more runs than he has, and like his bowling, one outstanding performance hints at what he should have achieved. In 1990 at Old Georgians he stroked an effortless 95 in under three hours to set up a remarkable win, getting out to his only false shot; it remains his only half-century for the club. A capable driver of the ball and not lacking courage, his concentration was often his biggest enemy. Off the field he was a key figure in the difficult years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, fulfilling most roles and doing much to drive the club forward, a role he repeated as captain of the Surrey Cryptics for more than a decade from 1996. He finally achieved his 100th appearance in 2004 after two decades of loyal service, and it is hoped (not only by opposition batsmen) that he continues to pop up for some time to come. There are fewer more passionate devotees to the game.
