Peter Russell

Peter Russell is one of those extremely frustrating individuals to whom the game seems to come too easily and, as a result, there is a feeling that he only ever showed glimpses of what he was really capable of. David Bugge wrote that 'his batting is as elegant as that of any OC - full of delicate touches and superb timing'. Certainly his century against the Blues in 1988 was a vintage innings. On his day he was capable of being as quick as any OC, making the ball skid through rather than bounce, but the mood had to take him for him to be really dangerous. In 1988 against Eton Ramblers something upset his usually laidback persona and he blasted away the tail, taking four wickets in 13 balls as we won the match by six runs. But the attractions of jazz-hat cricket, loose women and an active social life meant that cricket was always going to come second. Almost always late, almost always with a good excuse, on the occasions he did get body and mind to the ground at the same time, he was a delight.
