 Profile

John McDermott has been one of the key figures in the OCCC both as player and an active president. In the Cranleigh side for four seasons, Mac became an ever-present in the OC side after he had finished at university and National Service had finished with him. A solid, technically correct top-order batsman with a preference for attacking, he scored plenty of runs in club cricket but, strangely, his record for the OCs does not reflect his true ability. He never scored an OC hundred, but achieved centuries regularly for Wimbledon and Esher. His bowling was under utilised, but when he was called on his medium-paced seamers often produced results. He was also a safe slip fielder. Mac's captaincy of the club was autocratic, although his problems often stemmed from leading a side which was ageing as a result of poor recruitment in the 1960s. In the 1980s Mac disappeared abroad with IBM, but after implementing a job-cutting programme so successful that he made himself redundant, he returned to the OCCC as president in 1992 and has been instrumental in the recent successes of the club. An ever-present tourist, he is a vital part of the set-up, welcomed by OCs and opposition alike.
