Profile
By the time Abeed joined the OCCC he had already impressed in his two summers at Cranleigh and also played for Kenya in the U19 World Cup - he went on to play first-class cricket for Oxford Universities and in 2004 made his first-class debut for Kenya in the ICC's Intercontinental Cup. Within a couple of seasons of starting with us he was playing for Cranleigh in the lower reaches of Surrey club cricket. One of the most naturally talented cricketers to have come out of Cranleigh in recent years (whatever Eds Copleston might think!), Abeed is a technically correct top-order batsman who has the temperament and ability to score a hatful of runs. That he has not scored as many as he should have is down to his often batting too low down the order, and also getting bogged down when he could easily hit his way out of trouble. His offspin, rarely used until recent seasons, is deceptively successful and he has become a useful plug in limited-overs games. He is also a sound wicketkeeper, although as he picks up more finger injuries than Nasser Hussain he will probably keep less and less. Off the field Abeed provides non-stop amusement for his colleagues, not least because of his belief that he looks 'hard' when bald (wrong). His main legacy to mankind, however, is his claim to have invented the legendary OC tipple, the Turbo Shandy. His commitment to cricket is such that he works for Cricinfo.
