Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Johnny Gates’s arrival in the OC ranks was made without a great song and dance, and he very quickly established himself as a valuable and popular member of the XI. A top-order right-hand batsman and useful wicketkeeper, he made runs with calm authority. He struggled in his second and third seasons, but never complained and persevered until he batted his way back into form. Sadly, his fielding, described by his captain as resembling “a clumsy clown” remains a worry. However, in the 2006 Brewers Cup final, his innings did as much as anyone’s to secure us victory. Off the field, however, Gates is a completely different animal …with the emphasis being on animal. Probably the only OC ever to own a Skoda (and be proud of it, although not proud enough to ever bring it home matches) he really comes out of himself in the evenings. He has been spotted naked on a roundabout in Southampton, up to no good under the covers during cricket week and has been the owner of some of the most fearsome hangovers known to man. All these attributes suggest he is destined for high office in the club. Remarkably, he was senior prefect at Cranleigh, a fact greeted with the same incredulity as Steve Bailey's tenure a decade before.
