 Profile

Some unkind souls express amazement that Steve was actually deputy senior prefect at Cranleigh ('who the hell was senior prefect' is their usual follow-up) and another little-known fact was that he was captain of the 1st XI, although he admits it was more of a workers' co-operative than a team led by one man. Much could be said for the same of his two years at the helm of the OCs. A durable and courageous opening batsman, Kitbag (so called, Johnson claims, because of his resemblance to a holdall) has not scored as many runs as his ability suggests he should have. Strong off the front foot, his speciality is his amazing limbo to sway out of the way of fast bowlers. One over he faced in Antigua will live long in the memory. He ducked two bouncers, was so sure a third was coming that he ducked a virtual yorker before he snicked, relived to slip. On that tour he also showed his remarkable ability to dispose of fines, gaining a reputation as having an iron constitution until he was caught on video pouring a quadruple shot of rum over the side of the boat when he thought nobody was looking. He claims that his main scoring area is "in the V ... between third man and fine leg". His legbreak bowling, which was thought to show potential when he first joined the club, has deteriorated to the extent that one side recently accused the club of not taking the game seriously when he bowled. That may of owed more to the fact he openly throws his mystery ball but has yet to be no-balled, almost entirely because no umpire is able to quite believe what he has just seen. His catching style is remarkable (it has been compared to a crocodile snapping its jaws shut) but effective (although in 2002 he twice cracked fingers keeping wicket) and he is a useful wicketkeeper when the situation demands. His other claim to fame is resurrecting the consumption of Mateus Rose with any team curry.
