Profile
Bob Attwell's fame on the cricket field came almost entirely while playing for Cranleigh Village, where his feats are legendary. But he played - albeit too briefly - in two spells for the OCCC. The first while he was still at Cranleigh and immediately after he left, and the second when Nigel Paul reformed the side in the late 1950s. He was considered by many to be the finest slow left-armer Cranleigh has ever produced, and his record would tend to support that. He regularly topped Cranleigh's list of wicket-takers, and in 1956 he took all ten in an innings against a Nigel Paul XI which contained several first-class cricketers. He also had one other claim to fame, which few knew about. In 1943 he played in a game at Lord's between Surrey and Sussex Home Guards shortly before being posted overseas. During that match was at the non-striker's end when the batsman on strike, former England cricket and football international Andy Ducat, collapsed and died at the crease.
