Most of us, when we are not playing Old Cranleighan cricket, play league cricket for our respective clubs when the points are all important and the emphasis is all too often placed on not losing a game as opposed to trying to win it. Old Cranleighan cricket isn't a bit like league cricket, thank goodness, as we play for the enjoyment of the game — not points. Nevertheless, we still play competitive cricket and as the results show, most of the games were close run affairs.
As we play cricket in the right spirit, defeat was accepted with-out disappointment and victory was all the sweeter. This was never better illustrated than in our last game of the season at Esher. As the game was slipping away from us David Bugge, batting at No. 7 with Chris Carr at the other end, opened his shoulders and hit 40 out of 47 runs wanted to win in the three remaining overs. David was 93 not out at the end and his innings included 7 sixes and 9 fours — memorable stuff!
We lost a game when we set a total of 248 for 5 and we won a game when we were bowled out for only 135. 1979 was that sort of season. We played 13 games in all, won 4, drew 1 and lost 8 but 5 of those were defeats by the narrowest of margins possible.
The Club's strength is undoubtedly having enough good cricketers available to play in the `week' and at other times during the season. There were some fine batting performances, notably by Simon Ward who had two good 60s and was on 86 when he was unfortunately run out before lunch against the Blundellians. Melitus, Crawley, John Wells, Guest, Lyons, Davidson, Cooke, Paul and Bugge all played one or more major innings.
The bowling was much improved with John Cooke and David Bugge taking most of the wickets. They were well supported by John McDermott, John Wells, Nigel Paul and Graham Webb. As we are now a younger side the fielding was noticeably stronger and the close catching was good.
Although rain ruled out the games against the School and Lancing Rovers, the weather was, on the whole, kind to us, especially during the cricket week.
The Peek Cup this year led to a very difficult decision between Simon Ward and David Bugge. After much deliberation the award was made to David Bugge for his great all-round contribution with both bat and ball.
Pauleen Cooke, ably assisted by Louise and Andrew, catered superbly and financially we did well, making a good profit on the season.
Our thanks, as always, to the umpires, the groundsman and Chris Hamm, out tireless secretary and scorer. They all helped make 1979 another very enjoyable cricket season.
